Missing GST input credit? My AI finance head found nearly ₹3.5 lakh

A true D2C story: an accountant who left midway, an AI finance head, and the GST portal check that showed what I did not know I was missing.

Quick answer GST input credit goes missing when vendors have not reported your invoices, so the credit never reflects for you. My accountant left midway, so I recruited Akhil, my ZNOS AI finance head. He had my MIS ready in about an hour, then found nearly ₹3.5 lakh of input credit missing for 3 months and mailed the vendors.

The reel this story comes from (YouTube Short, under a minute).

My accountant left. Midway.

My books were in Zoho Books, properly maintained. But finding a good new accountant? A pain, and it takes time.

So I recruited Akhil. My finance head. An AI employee from ZNOS.

His task: check the accounts, add invoices, reconcile, find any issues.

An hour later

Within an hour or so, my MIS was ready. Missing invoices added. POs validated. Stock-ins checked.

Then he checked the GST portal.

The money I didn't know I lost

For a few invoices, there was no GST input credit. For the last three months.

That was concerning. He quickly composed a mail and sent it to those vendors, asking them to add the GST credit as soon as possible.4

What this means for your business

  • Clean books are not the same as checked books. Ours were properly maintained. The gap was outside the books, on the GST portal.
  • Your credit depends on your vendors. If they do not report your invoices, the credit does not reflect for you. Somebody has to check every month.4
  • A finance gap is a cash gap. For a D2C brand, lakhs of missing credit is working capital you are not using.

How ZNOS handles it

Akhil owns finance on the ZNOS AI team: reconciliation, MIS, purchase orders, stock-ins and GST checks. He finds the issues and does the follow-up work, and anything that moves money waits for the owner's OK. For what an AI team costs compared with hiring, read what my AI employees cost me.

Frequently asked questions

Why would GST input credit be missing?

You can generally claim input tax credit only when your supplier has reported the invoice in their GST return, so it reflects on your side. If a vendor has not done that, the credit does not show up for you.

What did the AI finance head find?

For a few invoices, we had not got the GST input credit for the last 3 months. That added up to nearly ₹3.5 lakh of GST input credit.

What did the AI do about it?

Akhil quickly composed a mail and sent it to those vendors, asking them to add the GST credit as soon as possible.

Was the money recovered?

The reel and this post say what happened: Akhil found it and sent a mail to the vendors. We do not claim more than that here.

What else did the AI do with the books?

My books were in Zoho Books, properly maintained. Within an hour or so Akhil had my MIS ready: missing invoices added, POs validated, stock-ins checked.

Who is Akhil?

Akhil is the finance head on the ZNOS AI team. He checks the accounts, adds invoices, reconciles and looks for issues.
